Graffiti Trees

The urge to leave your mark on the bark of a tree is an echo of the cave drawings left by our ancestors. The cry in the dark..."I was here. I lived. I loved." That said, trees are vital to our threatened ecosphere and graffiti leaves a wound which opens the door to infection; ultimately graffiti poses a risk to the health of the tree. This is a painting of a pair of trees in Accotink Park in Virginia, but the graffiti has be changed to present snippets from famous poems about the beauty of trees. Ribbons appear frequently in my work as "connectors." We are inextricably linked to nature; not separate from it. Our impact on nature is impact on ourselves.
